St. Saviour's Church - the inspiration for the founding of the Newtown Historical Society
Since 2006, a battle has been waged to save St. Saviour's Church of Maspeth, founded by town settlers in 1847. You can read all about the struggle at Forgotten-NY.
In 2008, the building was dismantled and currently sits in storage. The fight to save the grounds as a public park continues, however. Newtown Historical Society and Communities of Maspeth and Elmhurst Together are working with elected officials to secure funding for the project.
